I finished off 2012 in a very fun (and chilly!) way; celebrating with Amanda and Aaron as they committed themselves to each other in front of family and friends. And, just like the couple, it could not have been more laid back, relaxed and sweetly quiet. A snowy wedding definitely suited them, and we could not have gotten a more beautiful day…well, it could have been a bit warmer I suppose, but considering the time of year it was more than fair We did our First Look and wedding party shots downtown before the ceremony in the afternoon (pretty much a must for winter weddings due to lack of sunlight in the evenings), and because they had the chance to see each other first, they were more than comfortable when it came time to actually tie the knot. That did not stop the happy tears, however…and one thing I will admit about myself, I DO cry at weddings, even when I’m shooting them! Which makes it hard to see through the viewfinder sometimes, but I manage just fine. I love seeing love, what can I say. The happy tears continued into the evening with touching speeches and a beautiful twinkly environment. A very lovely and beautiful end to the year indeed.

My last wedding of the regular season was a couple of weekends ago, and I will admit to something: I was kind of glad. It was my 12th wedding in 3 months and I was looking forward to the break. I was anxious to get back to more portrait sessions (what used to be my ‘bread and butter’) and perhaps catching up on the 11 weddings I had done before this one. But by the end of the day, I was so pleased and my heart was so happy for Julie and Stuart, that I realized I would miss this feeling, and also the opportunity to witness two people committing their lives to one another, fully and happily. It re-inforced why I love photographing weddings, and it was the perfect way to end the season.

Julie and Stuart got married in one of the prettiest locations I’ve ever seen: the Alexander family farm (which has been around for 6 generations), in Fredericton Junction. I felt as though I had gone back in time a little bit, it was all so picturesque and pristine and original. The weather was perfect, sunny and clear, but unfortunately the wind was very chilly and I’m afraid everyone froze a little bit. Despite the chilly weather, the ceremony was beautiful, simple and very traditional, something you don’t often see. Again, as I listened to the sermon I felt as though I were in the early 1900s (with the exception of all the cellphone and iPads being used by the guests who sat on the hay bales…) It was absolutely lovely, and my heart fluttered for them.

Julie and Stuart are a very sweet couple, and I discovered, very young! (I overheard one of the bridesmaids say she was 18, and I learned that they were ALL 18!) It didn’t matter though, because you could see the true love they had for one another and I know they are going to be extremely happy growing old together

We took photos around the farm after the ceremony, then headed to the local rec centre for a very simple and nice reception. A lot of the details were done by members of the family (including Julie’s mother who baked and decorated over 70 beautiful cupcakes!), and the day was filled with happiness and cheer.

Julie and Stuart, as I drove home from the reception and took one final photo of the farm on my way back (final photo below), I sent a small thank you out to the world for allowing me the chance to do this. Thank you so much for the opportunity, I couldn’t have ended the year any better.

It’s hard for me to even know where to begin writing about Katie and Stephen’s wedding.  It was such an incredible and special weekend, filled with so many little details, noisy and quiet moments, family, food (SO much delicious food), the most beautiful Fall scenery I have ever seen in my entire life, and most of all, a couple who decided to celebrate their day exactly how they wanted surrounded by those who mean the most to them.

Since I can’t begin to do this wedding justice with my meagre writing abilities, I will simply list a few of the many highlights, and will include some of the incredible vendors/credits at the bottom.

So here we go: A twisty mountain road through the most vividly fire coloured leaves. A modern rustic cabin that I would happily move into for the rest of my life. Rain showers. A view to DIE for. Cheese plates. Meeting new friends. Breakfast for 18. A rose in your hair. Valentino shoes and brown leather boots. Officiant tips on an iPad. The bustle of getting ready. Frosting cupcakes. Grey suits and brown shoes. The quiet of an empty cabin. Lacing a wedding dress with your teeth. A calm, serene lake and unexpected sunshine. One of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve ever seen a bride give her groom. A simple ceremony celebrating 10 years together. A stunning flamenco inspired dress. Sangria made by the bride and personalized handmade chocolates. Being late (ALWAYS late). Chateau Beauvallon. A personal and local dinner menu. A tiny (and slightly frightening) wedding gift. Strolling through Mont Tremblant. A gondola ride to a rainy mountain top. Yummy asian lunch. Cigars and Disaronno in the hot tub. Hugs goodbye and finally…St-Hubert

Katie and Stephen, you treated me like a guest and friend the entire weekend and I will never forget your kindness and the opportunity you gave me to photograph a truly unique, personal and oh-so-beautiful wedding. My favourite moment of the entire weekend was when all the guests had left the cabin to head down to the lake, and Katie and Stephen were left alone for about 20 mins. They completely bucked tradition and decided to get ready together, and Stephen actually put on Katie’s dress. It was such a special moment, I had a huge smile on my face the entire time I was capturing it (it doesn’t hurt that these two look like they belong in a fashion magazine!)

Well, not all of my weddings could be sunny. A couple of weekends ago I photographed Laura and Kris’ Sussex wedding, and for the first time this year, I had to deal with RAIN. Not just a little sprinkle or a momentary shower, but pouring rain all.day.long. Considering this was my 10th wedding of the year though, I think that I was about due

Luckily for me not even the rain could put a damper on the bride and groom’s mood; the day was full of fun, smiles, and happiness. Laura was cheerful all day, and looked absolutely beautiful in her gown and veil. The girls looked great in their short black dresses, but I’m afraid they were a  bit chilly in the cooler-than-usual weather! They were absolute troopers for me though and endured the outdoor photos at the train station and the 8th Hussars (with only a bit of a break in the form of a warm hand dryer at the skating rink). The ceremony took place at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, another first time local location for me, and the reception was at the All Season’s Restaurant. The decorators did an amazing job with the red and black colour scheme, and the evening was filled with touching speeches, funny gifts, candy and little girls dancing.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of capturing Jim and Nadine’s beautiful wedding day. Knowing Nadine a bit from high school, I knew that the day would be fun, pretty, and bubbly/happy, just like her…of course I was right  The day was filled with lovely little details and special moments, and even though the weather forecast was downright miserable, we were blessed with a rainless window in which to take photos. The sun even made an appearance for a bit! Not even the weather could resist being cheerful for these two.

The ceremony took place at the beautiful Irving Saunders Chapel on the Kingswood campus; it was my first time shooting there and I look forward to doing it again, it is a graceful, peaceful place to get married. The thing I remember the most from the ceremony though was Nadine crying as she came down the aisle; you could see that she was overcome with emotion and happiness, and that her dream was coming true. Jim held it together pretty well, but I know that he was equally happy to be marrying his love, and I enjoyed catching a few big smiles out of him. After a few family photos at the church we headed to the 8th Hussards, a popular location for wedding photos but my first time shooting there as well. The bridal party looked absolutely perfect, with classic grey suits on the guys and mismatched coral shaded dresses on the girls (I’m a HUGE fan of the mismatches dresses, and choosing a different shade for each girl is even prettier!) Nadine was absolutely stunning in her gown adorned with flowers and feathers, and everything just popped against the early Fall backdrop. We couldn’t believe our luck with the weather, and as the sun came out I said a little prayer of thanks. We then headed to the reception at the Sussex Golf and Country Club. The decor by Unico in Moncton was just lovely, and the evening was spent with touching speeches, lots of kissing and dancing well into the night.

As you look through these images you’ll probably notice one thing; Nadine’s smile. She had the same happy grin the entire day, I swear there were barely any photos where she wasn’t radiating with happiness and joy! It’s truly infectious and I’m so happy for these two, they are going to live a wonderful life together. I wish them both all the happiness in the world, and the best of luck in the next year, which will bring them many happy changes I’m sure

After a (much, much needed) weekend off, I returned to work the first weekend in September to shoot Jodie and Kamil’s beautiful late summer wedding. And once again I was reminded of how truly lucky I am to get to do this for my profession, and of how I have been extremely lucky in shooting such beautiful, special celebrations. Jodie and Kamil’s was no exception; the day was filled with gorgeous details, a spectacular backdrop (their home on Darlings Island just outside of Hampton), and most importantly, a very sweet couple who became man and wife in front of all their friends and family.

The day threatened to rain, but once again we were lucky, and the sun (and heat!) actually came out just in time for the ceremony. Everything took place on their property; the ceremony under a beautiful willow tree, (some of) the photos on their little dock, and the meal/dance in a yurt (yes, a yurt!) set-up in their backyard. All of the flowers were picked from Kamil’s mother’s beautiful gardens, there were childhood and family photos hanging from the trees, a rowboat full of beer (always a plus!), and so many other beautiful little details that really added to the day. Jodie was of course a stunning bride, and the girls looked great in their beige mismatched dresses. The ceremony was short but sweet, with their son Kayden watching close by. We did a First Look before the ceremony, along with a few wedding party pictures down by the local covered bridge. (Quick side note: one thing that I loved about Jodie and Kamil was that they were straight forward with me from the moment we first met about what types of photos they were looking for [candids + traditional poses]; I always appreciate when couples do this because it gives me an idea of what to expect on their wedding day and allows me to prepare accordingly.) After the ceremony and before sunset Jodie, Kamil and I took a speedboat ride out to a special tree near their home where they wanted to get a picture, and it was probably one of the most fun ways I’ve ever gotten a shot

Jodie and Kamil, thank you for letting me play a small part in your day, I wish you all the best in your lives together as a married couple and as a little family!

My last wedding of the summer (well, of August anyway), was Natasha and Corey’s fun backyard wedding. I had met Natasha in the Spring to talk about their day and she said that she wanted lots of casual snapshots of family and friends, and wanted the day to be as relaxed and laid back as possible, and I think that’s exactly how it turned out for everyone.

We met at Tasha’s grandmother’s house (so beautiful!) for a few getting ready shots and some shots of the girls (including their 2-year old daughter and flower girl Lilly, so cute!), then headed to their home in Sussex Corner for the ceremony. The weather was absolutely perfect with clear blue skies with fluffy clouds, and their backyard was a perfect location. After the ceremony friends and family stayed behind for a BBQ (and some trampoline jumping) while we took some family shots then headed to Waterford for a few shots of the wedding party down by the river. Natasha was absolutely gorgeous in her wedding dress, but at the same time was perfectly fine with getting dirty (she and the girls didn’t wear shoes and her ‘dirty feet’ shot if one of my favourite bridal shots ever!) She’s equal parts girlie and tomboy, which I love (she drove us to the river in a gigantic truck, it was pretty crazy). Corey was a great sport during the photos, and you could see that these 2 have a really good time together, there was a lot of joking and laughs involved, which was nice (and again, relaxed). After it got dark we drove up to the Fairway for a coffee and cake reception, and I had a lot of fun photographing the cute kids dancing on the retro dance floor. We ended the evening with a few hotel hallway shots, and I left admiring how the simple, yet organized and put together wedding day went.

My first ‘destination’ wedding of the year was in Woodstock, NB, an area of the province I had only driven through in the past. I was so happy to spend the day there with Laura and Greg though, as their wedding turned out to be just lovely! And no wonder, ‘lovely’ is probably the best adjective to describe Laura; she is the kindest, most soft spoken and, well, loveliest person (inside and out) I think I’ve ever met.

The wedding took place at St. Gertrude’s Cathedral in Woodstock, a beautiful church that I was thrilled to photograph (I’m kind of a wannabe catholic, I have a thing for cathedrals). The ceremony and music were traditional and so, so beautiful, it was something that everyone was talking about afterwards. After the ceremony friends and family gathered at Greg’s parents’ house on the water for a few family photos and a little get together. These two have been together for quite some time so I think that everyone was thrilled to (finally) be at their wedding People came from far away and the mood was joyful throughout the day. After the family photos were done we drove to a nearby friend’s farm for some wedding party shots, and I was lucky again to be working with a really great group of people and a beautiful location. The reception took place at the (very modern) Best Western hotel, and again, the mood was joyous and fun. A few laughs were shared during the speeches, as well as a few tears shed…always a good combination. Right before heading home, I grabbed the bride and groom for a few more shots outside, just as the sun finally decided to make an appearance (the rest of the day was graciously cloudy and not too hot).

Laura and Greg, I hope you had a fantastic honeymoon in Niagra Falls and enjoy this little sneak peek, and I wish you both all the best as you start your new married life together!

I have to say, I LOVED photographing this wedding. It was the kind of wedding that I always envisioned photographing when I started doing this last year and just the type of casual, quirky, handmade and beautiful event that really makes my job easy. The funny thing is, I knew it would be amazing just from my brief meeting with the couple, Chris and Andréa, only about 4 weeks before the wedding (that’s right, they only booked me less than a month before their wedding, filling in my one free weekend in August!) They were so laid back and friendly, and as they described all the DYI projects they were doing and the location where the ceremony and the reception would take place, I started having a vision in my mind of what it would look like, and for the most part I was right (I even pegged Andréa as the ‘short vintage inspired dress and birdcage’ type bride, and she was!)

Chris and Andréa were married at the Ridgeback Lodge in Kingston, tucked up in the woods overlooking the Peninsula. It threatened to rain all day but save for a brief minute of light showers, the clouds held off and we stayed dry for the evening. As much as I love sun and light filled images, I must say, some of these darker/shadowy woods shots (especially those of the bride and groom), are among my top favourites ever. Chris (and some friends/family) built a lovely little stage/dance floor where the ceremony and later the dance took place, and they included so many handmade touches (like the 300+ origami cranes that Chris folded and used as the reception decor), it really made the day beautiful and personal. The wedding party was small, only one bridesmaid and one groomsman, and we did a ‘First Look’ before the ceremony, which helped everyone feel at ease and allowed for lots of time for portraits. The ceremony was simple and heartfelt, with lots of friends and family present. The reception included an appetizer/cocktail hour, and then a few dances, including a couple of square dances…something I think will remain unique to this wedding

Chris and Andréa, I had a wonderful time capturing your day, I hope you enjoy this somewhat large sneak, I just couldn’t narrow it down any more!

I’ve been looking forward to Megan an Gab’s wedding for one reason: to see how happy these two would be seeing each other as she walked down the aisle. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a couple so enamoured with each other. I saw it when we did their engagement session in June, and I saw it again on their wedding day. They are simply in love.

The wedding took place in Sussex on a beautiful (and hot) summer day. Gab’s friends and family had traveled from far to be there with them, and I loved the mix of French and English that was happening throughout the day (very much like my family). Megan was absolutely stunning in her lace wedding gown, and the boys looked very sharp in their military mess kits (sorry if that’s the wrong term Gab!) After a few photos of the girls at the nearby park, the ceremony took place at the Apohaqui community church, and the thing I remember the most from the ceremony was that Gab did not take his eyes off Megan once, not even for a second. We then headed to downtown Sussex for a few wedding party shots (and stopped traffic along the way), then headed up to the Golf and Country Club for a beautiful reception. Megan’s sister Stephanie and her friends put a lot of work into making the day special for the two of them, and everyone was in a wonderful mood all day. I think that it truly was a magical day for both of them, and I know they are going to live a very happy and loving life together.

Tracy and Steve’s wedding had a few firsts for me; it was my first big church wedding (and first catholic ceremony), my first ‘gift’ wedding (Lauren, one of the bridesmaids, generously gifted my services to Tracy because she wanted her to have professional photos on her wedding day), and my first groom in a white suit jacket However, it wasn’t the first time I met the bride and a few of the guests/wedding party; Tracy was actually one of the bridesmaids (in fact, the ‘pregnant bridesmaid’) in Jade and Jared’s wedding last summer. Now it was Tracy’s turn to be the bride and Jade’s turn to be the bridesmaid (how fun is that?!)

The wedding took place on Friday evening at St. Peter’s Church in the North End of Saint John, followed by a reception at the Riverside Golf and Country Club in Rothesay. We were worried about the rain all day, but luckily it held off and we only had to deal with a bit of fog/drizzle/cloud cover, which kind of worked out because it made Tracy’s wedding colours (jade and fuchsia) really pop (her bouquet was one of the prettiest and brightest ones I’ve seen lately!) This was a really fun group of people, and like at Jade and Jared’s wedding, the limo ride to the portrait location was one of the funnest parts. Tracy and the girls were so pretty and happy together, and even though Tracy and Steve have been together for a little while now (and have 2 lovely daughters), you could tell that they are still very much head over heels for each other, making each other laugh and cuddling all night. The daddy daughter dance was probably one of the cutest ones I’ve seen (their slow dance cut out about a minute in, the DJ said ‘oops, we must have a technical difficulty’ while everyone looked on curiously, then about 3 seconds later another up beat song comes on and Tracy and her dad just start busting out the dance moves, it was so funny!), and there were a lot of cute little details that went into their reception ‘beach theme’ (from the candy bar to the sand and seashell details, to the dulse wedding favors), I had a great time capturing it all.

My 2nd wedding of the year was Stephanie and Matt’s beautiful beach/cottage wedding. I had been waiting for this day since Matt and Steph’s engagement session last September, and it did not disappoint! It was a wonderful day from start to finish, filled with so much primping, chaos, fun, heat (boy was it hot!), sand, purple and green, food, games, dancing, and most of all, love. Oh, the love between these two, you could just see it. Matt’s reaction to seeing Steph walk down the aisle was one that every girl dreams of, and Stephanie was an absolutely gorgeous bride. The amount of work that they put into making this day happen for everyone was apparent in all the little details that went into the day; from the signs pointing guests to games and drinks, to the popcorn machine and canoe full of beer (!!), everything was so well thought out and organized (something Stephanie and I have in common, we’re list makers!) I left just as the party was really getting started and I’m sure it went well into the night, these people know how to have a good time!

The happy couple are actually in Europe right now on their honeymoon (so jealous!), but when they get back I hope that they enjoy this sneak peek of their day. Matt and Stephanie, thank you for letting me part of it all, and I wish you all the best in your life together.

Here we go, the first wedding of 2012! And what a great way to start the season, with Chris and Stephanie’s beautiful outdoor, laid-back, bed and breakfast wedding. It was such a lovely day (the weather was seriously PERFECT), I enjoyed myself the entire time. Stephanie is such a fun, sweet person, she really took the time to make sure everyone was taken care of, even on her special day, and the girls and guys were really fun to hang out with (I gotta say, this is probably the only time where I’ll be shooting a wedding that involved so many hunting rifles/shotguns!)

Here we go, the big one: my favourite wedding images of 2011!

Wedding photography is an interesting beast: it’s incredibly fun, but incredibly intense at the same time. You are there on one of the most special occasions of a person’s life, and you are in charge of making sure that their memories are captured forever. Unlike portrait photography where you can get a ‘do over’, you only get one shot at capturing those moments in a wedding, and that can be quite scary to think about…but it’s also a chance to share in something really special, and if you can relax enough to enjoy it, it can be the best job ever.

This past year I had the chance to photograph 4 weddings, and each was different and unique it its own way. Whether it was an early spring casual affair or an elegant winter wedding, or a couple of large summer weddings, one urban and one rural, each presented different challenges and different aspects that helped me grow as a photographer. One thing that they all had in common though? Awesome brides! I’m really lucky in that way, each of my couples were really easy to work with and trusted me completely, which is a true honour.

This year I’m going to have the opportunity to work with even more awesome brides and grooms, and I’m anxious to take what I learned last year and build upon it this year. As I mentioned before, it wasn’t an area of photography that I thought I would be doing, but it’s one that I’m happy found me!

I’m excited to share my last wedding of 2011 on the blog today! Elisa had contacted me last summer after seeing Jade and Jared’s wedding photos and had originally booked me for August of this year (2012), but after some changes to their situation (will get into that later), they decided to re-book for December 30th of 2011. I’ll admit I was a bit nervous when she told me since it was going to be my first winter wedding, but I was up to the task and was interested to see how it would play out. Well, with the mild winter we’ve had so far, it actually worked out quite well! I call this my ‘winter-that-doesn’t-look-like-winter’ wedding, since there isn’t a flake of snow to be found. It was a lovely (but chilly -6C day), and everyone was so great toughing it out for the outdoor photPos (let me just say that we were QUICK!)

Patrick and Elisa were such a beautiful and sweet couple, their family and friends (especially the girls Chantal and Lindsey) were a lot of fun, and the day went off without a hitch (well, nothing major anyway) They were married and had the reception at the Riverside Golf and Country Club in Rothesay (a beautiful location), and we took the outside photos at the Commons nearby and at the park across the streets from the club (can’t remember the name now!) It was a casual but elegant affair, and the fact that it was winter (and dark for most of it) made it all the more sparkly and pretty, (despite the photographic challenges, ha!)

Isn’t Elisa beautiful? And would you have guessed that she was actually 19 weeks pregnant when these were taken?! Yep, that was the ‘situation’ I had mentioned before…they are expecting in the Spring! So happy for them

On a related note…

I am overwhelmed with the amount of interest in my wedding photography this year…honestly it wasn’t something I thought I would be doing much of, but I’ve been getting a ton of inquiries for this year and next, and I’m actually almost completely booked up for 2012! I’m so very grateful to everyone who has allowed me to be such an important part of their special day, and look forward to working with many more awesome brides and grooms in the future!
